Overview

India is gearing up to boost its steel production, with a target of 300 million tons (MnT) steel capacity by FY31, a significant jump from the current 180 MnT. To achieve this, the country will require around 161 MnT of coking coal. Looking ahead to Vision 2047, India aims to reach an impressive 500 MnT steel capacity, with coking coal to still to remain a vital input material in steel making.

The theme "Global Coking Coal: Diversify, Innovate, Decarbonise - Steel Making" highlights the industry's need to innovate and diversify in the face of global challenges while transitioning to a sustainable and decarbonized future.

Decarbonization is crucial, as steel production accounts for 7% of global greenhouse gas emissions....

A secure, sustainable, and consistent supply of coking coal will be essential across the steel industries. As India and the world move towards a more sustainable future, innovative solutions and collaborative efforts will be key to achieving these ambitious steel production targets.

As a crucial element in steel production, the coking coal sector faces significant challenges in its pursuit of a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future due to its substantial carbon footprint. However, there are several promising strategies that can reshape the industry's future and drive it toward greater sustainability.

The ISA Coking Coal Summit is a dedicated forum for discussing the accessibility of coking coal and devising strategies to promote a sustainable evolution of the coking coal supply chain within India's steel industry. The summit brings together leading voices from the global coking coal and steel sectors, including senior industry leaders, government officials, and expert consultants. This year, ISA Coking Coal Summit will once again serve as a dedicated platform to explore the future of this vital resource and its impact on the steel industry’s growth and decarbonization goals.
